Highlights: Alex Rosen Recital at the Crusades Room

What? You don’t know Alex Rosen?
This young American bass-baritone, trained at the Juilliard School in New York, is emerging as one of the most captivating voices on today’s Baroque scene.

On 19 January 2026, he will give a recital at the Salle des Croisades, Château de Versailles, entitled “Monsters and Heroes from Lully to Purcell”, accompanied by Gaétan Jarry and the Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal.

The recital explores the fascinating theme of contrasting forces: heroic grandeur and monstrous darkness. Through arias by Lully, Rameau, and Purcell, Rosen delves into the Baroque repertoire’s dramatic contrasts — from fury to nobility, from shadowy depths to triumphant light. His deep, supple, and expressive voice perfectly conveys figures of authority, mystery, or even menace, brought to life with remarkable theatrical intensity.

Already celebrated across major European festivals and opera houses, Rosen has performed as Seneca in Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea, Jupiter in Cavalli’s La Calisto, and Melisso in Handel’s Alcina. Each role highlights his mastery of phrasing and his keen sense of drama, captivating audiences wherever he performs.

At Versailles, Rosen invites listeners on a musical journey where Baroque gods, monsters, and heroes come vividly to life. This recital promises to be both poetic and powerful, offering an immersive experience into the depth and passion of human expression, all rendered through the exceptional voice of Alex Rosen.

History and Fun Facts about the Crusades Room

At Versailles, anything is possible! Even listening to music or concert operas under the coats of arms of the main Crusade leaders who set out to rescue Christ's tomb in Jerusalem.

Located in the north wing of the Château de Versailles, the Great Crusades Room is, as its name suggests, the largest of the so-called Crusades halls. Its walls feature a mixture of coats of arms and master paintings, such as Delacroix's Entry of the Crusaders in Constantinople.

The fifth Room of the Crusades at the Château de Versailles were built in 1843 by King Louis-Philippe as a tribute to the nobility of the Legitimists and to the crusades that took place from the 9th to the 18th centuries.

It should be noted that the creation of the Crusades rooms indirectly gave rise to one of the most important falsifications of medieval documents in French history. A large number of families presented false documents proving that one of their ancestors had taken part in the Crusades. Most of these documents had been purchased from the Courtois forgery shop. This clever forger used authentic medieval documents and seals, scratching them out and adding the names he wanted.

Today, forgery is a thing of the past, as concerts and operas in concert are performed live in this magnificent grand hall.
